How did the Christmas tree become such a popular and iconic Christmas tradition? The famous Evergreen tree is usually made of pine, spruce, or fir, and is decorated with many ornaments and lights in the Western world as part of their Christmas festivities, and has a European history. In ancient times, pagan Europeans sought the practice of tree worship as a method of conversion to their newfound Christian faith. Many Scandinavians decorated trees around Christmas time, as a way of scaring away the Devil. This custom had grown so much in popularity that it began to be observed in Germany, where many Germans placed a Yule tree at entrances in their homes. This eventually would set the origins of the modern Christmas tree, The modern Christmas tree has history as being a part of a medieval play about Adam and Eve, where the prop of the “paradise tree” was used to represent the Garden of Eden. The tree was decorated with apples. Because December 24th was the feast day of Adam and Eve, as a symbol of the eucharist many Germans would hang wafers on these trees. In later traditions, people decorated the trees with candles, and cookies of varying sizes. Around this time, a wood shaped triangle was decorated with small Christmas sculptures- known to many Germans as “the Christmas pyramid”. By the 16th century, the pyramid and the paradise tree had blended, eventually becoming the Christmas tree as many of us know and enjoy.
